Another leading character.
It is the space itself.

The space where you enjoy the sword performance and cuisine is itself another leading character in the experience.
MATSUMOTO SAMURAI takes place inside the historic and elegant Kappo Matsumotokan.
Every detail—from the traditional Japanese paintings of flowers, birds, wind, and moon on the ceilings and fusuma sliding doors, to the intricate carvings in the ranma transoms—adds a sense of refined beauty to the atmosphere.
As you take in the performance and savor the meal, the surroundings immerse you even deeper in the essence of Japanese culture.

Kappo Matsumotokan is a long-established Japanese restaurant that first opened its doors in 1890.
At the time, about 40 years had passed since Japan opened to the world, and Western clothing, cuisine, and architecture were beginning to spread throughout urban areas.
However, traditional Japanese lifestyles—kimono, tatami floors, and washoku (Japanese cuisine)—still dominated daily life, creating a unique blend of Japanese and Western styles across the country.
Though the samurai class had disappeared under the new government, their spirit, manners, and aesthetic sensibilities remained deeply rooted in people’s values.
The principles of Bushido—loyalty, courtesy, and honor—were especially influential as a moral compass in society.
The venue for MATSUMOTO SAMURAI, known as the “Phoenix Room” (Hōō-no-Ma), was completed in 1935 and is now a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property.
As you enjoy the sword performance and traditional meal, we invite you to take in the refined beauty of this culturally rich space.
